Urban Decay

Urban Decay

Urban decay greatly contributed to the fall of Rome. "All of the wealthy Romans lived in a house with marble walls, intricate patterned tiles and glass windows. However, the majority of Rome was poor. They lived in small rooms with repulsive odors that were part of six or more story apartment buildings. At one time, there were 44,000 apartment houses in Rome! The first floor apartment was rarely occupied by the poor because they were $400 a year" (Fall of Rome Packet).  The living conditions of the poor in Rome were unbearable and grotesque. The stairs were shaky, unstable and unreliable. Every aspect of their daily life was slowly decaying. Evidently, the decay of Rome was a tremendous add to the already-falling Roman Empire.
