Excessive Military Spending to Defend the Empire

         As you already know, the emperors of the Roman Empire were greedy and inadequate rulers. They were terrible at maintaining the empire's financial situations; most of the money went towards the military in an attempt to protect themselves from invading enemies. This left very little money for other needs of the citizens of Rome. 
They ended up leading Rome to decay within itself, and eventually the meek city was left poor and vulnerable. The armies the empire had so foolishly hired were unreliable and overly costly. To the rotten matters even worse, the empire was forced to raise the taxes significantly which damaged the economy, as well as the hopes of their people. All of this played a major role in the fall of Rome.
